History
Perhaps the most renowned cigar brand world-wide, Cohiba cigars are the creme de la creme of premium cigars. While the name “Cohiba” is an old Taino word for tobacco, the Cohiba brand wasn’t created until 1966 as the premier cigar brand for diplomats. While there is some debate about its inception, the most commonly accepted lore of Cohiba cigars’ origins is that the cigar was originally made and blended for one of Fidel Castro’s bodyguards, who then shared them with Castro himself. Castro loved the cigar so much he made the Cohiba the exclusive cigar of the Cuban Communist Party and made them only available to government officials and diplomats.
Much like many legacy Cuban brands, General Cigar registered the Cohiba brand name in 1978. While both cigars are expertly crafted, consumers may have a difficult time telling the two apart. The original, Cuban Cohibas are only available internationally everywhere except for the United States, while the Dominican made cigars have no restrictions. Also, the Cuban Cohibas feature an image of a golden Taino native on the band, while General Cigar’s Cohibas do not. Additionally, the Dominican made Cohibas have a red dot within the “O”, leading to their nickname as “red-dot Cohibas.”
Delineated from the one of the world’s leading cigar brands, Cohibas are well worth the price. Earning too many 90+ ratings to count and scores of Top 25 Rankings, Cohiba cigars will do anything but disappoint. These Dominican puros have been drafted by the very best rollers available, using the very best crops of tobacco. Try Cohiba cigars today and don’t look back!
